Tomentosa Santolina Flower Seeds

SKU: SFS-SAN-TOM-ER
Our ‘Tomentosa’ Santolina Flower seed is a perennial, evergreen shrub forming tidy clumps of wooly-looking, silvery-colored foliage topped by button-type flower heads of brilliant yellow pompoms in midsummer. Widely known as Lavender Cotton, it will withstand just about any amount of clipping and shaping, as long as that is done long before the temperatures in your area drop to 5°F so as not to damage the exposed branches. The leaves, the stems and the flowers can all be dried and used in dried arrangements, in insect-repelling, aromatic sachets and in potpourris. Extremely hardy, Tomentosa Lavender Cotton thrives on neglect, tolerating low water conditions even in the hottest climates, as long as the drainage is good. Wet feet will result in root rot. It is said that to really appreciate Santolina’s fragrance, you need to slowly brush your hand across the tops of the flower heads, though the entire plant is aromatically pleasing! Approximately 50 seeds per each hand-filled packet. More details...

Tomentosa Santolina Flower Seeds

Santolina Flower Seeds can be directly sown into your flower bed and/or vegetable garden, or started indoors in a seed tray with planting medium so as to get a head start on the growing season and have earlier blossoms. Seeds sown indoors should be started 6 to 8 weeks before the expected last frost date for your area and then transplanted after all danger of frost has passed. When planting outside, sow the seeds shallowly within one week of the last frost date for your area. Santolina is very drought tolerant once established, so choose an outdoor location with plenty of sun> Lavender Cotton prefers somewhat sandy and rocky soil over clay, but is adaptable as long as it is well drained. Cover the seeds only lightly with vermiculite or compost, the preferred method of watering being from the bottom rather than the top. A soaker hose is ideal. At soil temperatures of between 65 to 75°F, germination will normally take 10 to 15 days, though the dicot seeds have been known to germinate up to two years later.
