Rock Phosphate

Rock Phosphate can be added to soils which are lacking the proper pH levels to grow the healthiest plants. Due to the interaction of alkaline soil particles, phosphate, even if present in your soil,  can be largely unavailable to your plants; the best results are achieved when putting about a teaspoon of rock phosphate into your planting hole when transplanting seedlings and just planting right on top of it. You can also do the same when planting seeds, spreading that teaspoon out across the planting furrow or dividing into the smaller planting holes. A bag of rock phosphate will last forever! On the other hand, if you have nicely neutral or slightly acidic soil (lucky you!), you do not need to add rock phosphate.

We recommend testing your soil to determine its current nutrient health prior to adding fertilizers or supplements. We have a full range of soil testers, guaranteed to help you have the most beautiful flower gardens, the most productive vegetable gardens and the healthiest landscape, while providing only what is necessary for the optimal soil health.

Organic Traditions™ Rock Phosphate by Espoma is mined natural rock from phosphorus-rich deposits. Washed to free clay impurities and then heated to remove moisture, it is then ground to a fine powder for easy application and incorporation into your soil. Espoma's Organic Traditions Rock Phosphate is far superior in phosphate content, as compared to black and even colloidal rock phosphate. A natural source of phosphorus, plants require this nutrient for healthy root development and for fruit and flower production. It is also high in minor elements, such as boron, zinc, nickel and iodine, essential for plant growth and health. Because Rock Phosphate is ground to such a fine powder, an efficient part of it is immediately available to the plant; also a long-term, slow-release source of phosphorus, as the plant’s roots give off carbon dioxide and certain organic acids that react with the Rock Phosphate, the fine powder makes the phosphorus available for plant use as needed.

Soft Rock Phosphate is an all organic source of nutrients for your plants; one that does not include nitrogen, which is not always desirable or necessary, especially when growing vegetable crops. Basically, soft rock phosphate works like this: it raises the sugar content of your crops, which in turn, raises the mineral content, which in turn, raises the test weight of your crop, and therefore, the overall quality. It’s elementary…really!
