Sage plants are available in both annual and perennial varieties. Flower spikes, ranging from very dense to airy are held above the appealing, textured and often serrated foliage that always has just a hint of dusty gray in the coloration. Butterflies, hummingbirds and bees tend to love them, while deer steer clear, as do most pests and diseases. Sage is also commonly called Salvia, Meadow Sage, Texas Sage or Mealycup Sage, and probably even a few names we haven’t heard of yet. Sage will tolerate poor soils, though the annual varieties perform best with a fertile, light and well-drained habitat. They are popular for large containers and many gardeners not only display them in their summertime vases, but dry them for use in fall, winter and early spring arrangements.
