Nasturtium Flower Seeds

Our Nasturtium Flower Seeds grow jewel-toned blossoms most often considered an annual, but self-sowing so readily as to behave like a perennial. This plant is almost entirely edible, the blossoms and leaves being used much like a peppery herb, to add flavor and color to any number of fresh summer dishes. Use the blossoms to garnish summer salads or to decorate festive plates; dry or shred fresh leaves for summer cold casseroles or pickle the young, green, seeds, using them much like capers. The seeds even have a good dose of vitamin C! Or, you don’t have to eat them at all; just enjoy the wonderful colors and the ease with which they grow.

Nasturtium, pronounced nas-TUR-shi-um, is the common name, with the scientific name being Tropaeolum majus, pronounced troe-pee-OH-lum MAY-juss. Yep, Nasturtium is much easier to remember and to pronounce. Amazingly easy to grow and fantastically colorful, you will find Nasturtiums in bushy-type plants, as trailing varieties for cascading from walls and containers and as climbing cultivars, adding dramatic height and colorful interest. Not a heavy feeder at all, they actually thrive on some neglect. In fact, regular feeding will result in an over abundance of foliage with few blossoms. They are however, prone to aphids, often used as a “trap” in and around vegetable gardens. A stiff shot with the garden hose can dislodge the aphids or you can utilize a safe and natural alternative to chemicals in order to control the aphids, as well as a substantial number of other destructive garden pests. Our ‘Canary Bird Vine’ Nasturtium Flower Seed yields one of the most unusual nasturtium cultivars. Sometimes called Canary Creeper, this showy nasturtium is guaranteed to attract a captive audience. Growing and climbing exceptionally fast in just one season, from a distance, each of the tiny, 1 to 1 1/2-inch, yellow, fringed blossoms looks like it could be a tiny canary, hence the name. The leaves are deeply and gracefully lobed, a pleasing sight in and of itself, and a great plate garnish, but the flowers…those are worth singing about! Our ‘Jewel Mix’ Nasturtium Flower Seed is definitely a pleasing dwarf variety, a mixture of Jewel Series colors in Cherry Rose, Golden, Peach Melba and Primrose. As with many of the dwarf nasturtiums, the leaves are slightly smaller and heavily marbled with ivory and white markings, making for an incredibly colored exhibit. Our ‘Jewel of Africa’ Nasturtium Flower Seed is an old-fashioned nasturtium cultivar producing larger-than-average 2-inch blossoms on pretty green foliage marbled with creamy variegation. The striking, trumpet-shaped blossoms bloom in shades of cream, maroon, orange and yellow, along with the more complex hues of apricot, salmon, scarlet and peach. This is what arbors and trellises are for, though Jewel of Africa looks equally stunning as a ground cover, quickly filling in the most difficult-to-grow-on slope!
