Organic Kale Seed

Each packet of Certified Organic Kale Seed has approximately 750 seeds. Each plant produces approximatly 3-pounds of fresh kale.


Kale is a cool weather crop and can be direct sown into your garden or started indoors. If planted directly into the garden, soil temperatures are between 60-65°F. If seed starting indoors, temperatures should be between 60-80°F. Under the best conditions, it takes 5-8 days for kale seed to germinate. Seed should be started 7 weeks before your transplant date.


In order to grow the healthiest; best tasting kale, the pH level of your garden soil should be 5.5-6.5. A soil tester will take the guess work out of determining the pH levels.

Organic Red Russian Kale Seed produces a plant which is most tender and flavorful in cooler months and has much better flavor after a frost. It is an unusual and beautiful variety that grows 2 feet tall. Red Russian produces leaves that are not bitter, are very tender, and are intersected by purple-pink veins, lightly tinged with purple on the margins. In cold weather the leaves turn reddish-purple and are very attractive. Approximately 750 seeds per packet.

Organic Siberian Kale Seed produces a plant which has huge, blue-green feathery oak leaf-type leaves and white stems making it a very striking kale. This is one of the best varieties for raw salad use and spring "napini," as leaves are more tender than most other kales. Plants are extremely hardy and grow rapidly. Flavor is actually improved by light frost, but Siberian Kale is exceptional anytime. Thomas Jefferson commonly included Siberian kale in his kitchen garden at Monticello.
