Stachys Flower Seeds

Stachys Flower Seeds are most often called Lamb’s Ear or Wooly Betony and is native to Turkey, Armenia and Iran, though much of the temperate world grows it as an ornamental in less formal gardens, in some cases naturalizing it over larger areas to replace the garden completely.

Stachys, pronounced STAK-iss, is most often followed by byzantine, but can also be called S. lanata or S. olympica. Forming mats of growth by way of its root system, this hardy perennial is quite capable of choking out weeds and grass once it becomes well established, but is not aggressive in taking over its habitat. Quite adaptable, Lamb’s Ear will tolerate both moist and dry conditions, as long as the soil is well-drained, its nemesis being the combination of heat and humidity, which is liable to do it in. It does flower, though most flowers of this species are not large or showy, instead being petite and most often in hues of pinky-purple and violet. If planted en masse, the combination of flowers all at the same time is quite spectacular, though Lamb’s Ears are more often grown for their whimsical rosettes of fuzzy, silvery leaves, ranging from under 4-inches in length to over 12-inches long. Most people will plant these where they can be touched, their velvety feel being somewhat at odds with nature, and therefore unique. Though not a strong feeder, we recommend half dose, regular feeding with Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Stachys seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.

Our ‘Lanata’ Stachys Flower seed is one of the shorter varieties of Stachys, making it an ideal ground cover in a sunny area with good drainage, though it will also tolerate light shade. Planted almost solely for its foliage, the big attraction is the fuzzy, velvety feel of the leaves, almost impossible not to touch, even if you have to walk across the yard to do it! Crafters use Lanata Lamb’s Ears to make fresh wreaths, the rosette tips being ideal for this purpose. Deadheading the blossoms will ensure nicer foliage for your crafts and throughout the winter months. These prefer to be cleaned up during your spring cleaning! Approximately 100 seeds per each hand-filled packet.
