True Geranium Plants

True Geranium Plants produce small, thin stemmed flowers held above dense foliage that is usually deeply cut and which often displays bright orange and red fall foliage. They attract butterflies and bees and are deer-resistant.

True Geranium, pronounced troo jer-AY-nee-um, commonly called Cranesbill or Hardy Geranium, are wonderful specimens for planting where they will spill over a rock wall or can have the freedom to spread as a ground cover. A sloping, difficult-to-mow hill would be ideal!

Most cultivars can be sheared back to promote a re-bloom, while some bloom all season long with hardly any care at all. This perennial should be divided every 3-5 years to maintain its healthy fullness and more profuse blooming.

Biokovo True Geranium Plant

The 'Biokovo' True Geranium Plant is the original cultivar of the Hardy Geranium hybrid. The masses of white flowers have barely ruffled petals with pink and lilac veining and are often softly touched with lightly blushing pink, especially at the base. The most arresting features though are the gracefully curving pink stamens that gradually change from light to dark pink and then are topped by cherry red anthers. The foliage is medium-dark green and highly aromatic, almost lemony. This beauty is a naturally occurring Cranebill hybrid discovered in the Biokovo Mountains of Croatia.

The 'Brookside' True Geranium Plant blossoms in rich, violet-blue with white eyes and has two blooming seasons. This Hardy Geranium will bloom the first time in late spring, those blossoms lasting through midsummer, and then will bloom again in early fall, its blossoms remaining until the first frost. But the beauty doesn’t end there. The deeply cut leaves of this Cranebill turn brilliant shades of orange and red in the fall, a striking contrast to the deep blue flowers still in attendance.

Our 'Espresso' True Geranium Plant produces wonderfully colored showy lavender-pink blossoms; however, it is the foliage for which this variety is most widely grown. Having distinct café au’ lait coloration, the 6-inch leaves are deeply cut, forming a loosely clumping mound atop which the 1.5-inch blossoms dance for 6 to 7 weeks. This crane’s bill does not normally rebloom, so deadheading is not necessary, though the foliage will maintain that unusual color in the garden through to the first frost, the flowers giving way to distinctive beak-shaped seed capsules adding even more fall and winter interest.

Rozanne True Geranium Plant

The 'Rozanne' True Geranium Plant was selected by the Perennial Plant Association (PPA) to be the Perennial Plant of the Year in 2008. This Hardy Geranium's title is well-deserved. Rozanne meets or exceeds all of the Association’s criteria. At first growing in clumps, Rozanne will spread, especially in rich, fertile soil. Her main attraction of course, is her flowers. Rozanne’s blossoms are lilac at the center, but fully 3/4 of the petals change to a vivid violet-blue with even darker veining and edges. This Cranebill blooms consistently across the full season and the deeply-cut, emerald green foliage stays pretty just as long.
