Rose of Sharon Plants

Rose of Sharon Plants are a type of hibiscus that grows as a shrub or a tree, rather than as a potted or bedding plant, though those varieties are often known by the same name. You also may hear them referred to as Rose Mallow, Giant Mallow and Althea. Multi-stemmed, the Rose of Sharon bush can be pruned in late winter, during its first two seasons of growth, to have one main trunk; thereby making it a Rose of Sharon tree. A deciduous shrub, it is often used as a flowering privacy hedge, though in the winter, the privacy provided by this shrub will fall short.

Rose of Sharon grows best in full sun, planted in well-drained soil. This hibiscus shrub blooms profusely, its blossoms sharing many of the same tropical and colorful characteristics as its hardy or tropical cousins, though they leaf-out and bloom much later, providing flowering interest long after most flowering shrubs have quit blooming. Able to stand up to hot summer temperatures, Rose of Sharon is also reasonably drought-tolerant and therefore attractive to our customers in Southern climates.
