Dusty Miller Plants

Silver Ragwort was originally classified under the Senecio genus and is still widely referred to as Senecio cineraria, though its classification has been changed to Jacobaea maritima. Silver Ragwort is also commonly known as Dusty Miller, a name that is shared with a wide variety of plants that have silvery, dusty leaves. Very heat and drought tolerant, Dusty Miller is considered an evergreen subshrub and is most often grown for its silver-dusted foliage. Having stiff stems that are woody at the base, the leaves, along with the stems, are covered with white to grayish-white hairs. The blossoms are small, yellow and resemble a tiny Echinacea flower. Many gardeners will remove the flowers as they appear, believing they take energy from the plant, making it leggier. The choice is yours.

Silver Ragwort is winter hardy, tolerating temperatures down to 5°F and prefers full sun, though it grows almost as well in light shade, often brightening up those shady corners where other colorful plants won’t grow. It is recommended for growing in North America for its fire resistance, salt tolerance and deer resistance. Dusty Miller is widely adaptable with only average water requirements and is easy to grow. Pinching the center stems will encourage fullness.

Our 'Silver Dust' Dusty Miller is widely used for its silvery foliage and looks fantastic when planted on the outer edges of mixed containers or hanging baskets. Mostly mounding, this Ragwort will also spread and is often used for growing in between annuals and perennials, providing color when the blossoms have faded and for the protection offered under its leaves for more heat-sensitive plants. The finely divided silvery leaves provide interest and color all season long, day or night!
