Penstemon Plants

Penstemon Plants are a genus of wildflower only common to North America. There are 280 species in habitats ranging from the Guatemalan mountains to the cold tundra of both Alaska and Canada. Having been adapted for gardens over the last 300 years, there are now over 800 cultivars available and even a Penstemon Society available for those who can’t get enough.

Penstemon, pronounced PEN-stee-mon, is more commonly referred to as Beard-tongue or Beardtongue, due to its prominent staminode, which is an infertile stamen, and which, in some cultivars is long and extremely hairy, resembling a bearded tongue hanging out of the throat and lips of this flower. The blossoms will have a tubular base (the throat), though some will appear much longer and more pronounced than others; all will have a visible staminode and lips of various shapes and sizes creating a dressy bell at the top of the blossom. Hummingbirds love Beard-tongue, while deer and rabbits avoid it; they are extremely drought-resistant, prefer sunny, well-drained areas and are hardy to temperatures well below 0°F.

Huskers Red Penstemon Plant

Price $6.00

The 'Husker Red' Penstemon Plant was developed at the University of Nebraska, hence the name, which is indicative of the deep red foliage of this particular Beard-tongue. Named as the 1996 Perennial Plant of the Year, it has remained a popular cultivar with gardeners due to its drought tolerance and amazing color that doesn’t require flowers to be appealing. Its recognizable red foliage bears clusters of tubular-shaped pure white flowers on burgundy stems, taking this specimen from just appealing to utterly eye-catching!
