Itea Plants

Itea Plants are an outstanding flowering shrub that has amazing summer and fall performance and interest. Itea has panicles of gracefully arching 4-inch white flower spires that open from the base to the tip, which results in an exceptionally long bloom time. The flowers have a slightly "woodsy" smell, in addition to being daintily eye-catching. Sweetspire is a semi-evergreen in the southern part of its range, but is otherwise a deciduous shrub that boasts extraordinary red to burgundy to purple foliage in the fall, those colors persisting well into winter. The flowers provide nectar to butterflies, but deer steer clear of them.

Itea (Eye-te-ah) is also called Sweetspire, Sweet Spire, Virginia Sweetspire and Virginia-willow. Growing in a mounded shape with slender branches, this attractive ornamental looks best when planted in mass plantings. Superior flowering and improved density occurs when planted in full sun, but Sweetspire will tolerate shade very well. It is also forgiving when it comes to soil conditions, even tolerating short periods of sogginess. Though happiest in loamy, sandy soil, Itea will also grow well in clay if well-drained.
