Euphorbia plants are sun-loving annuals with softly colored bracts (modified or specialized small leaves) surrounding subtly defined flowers, usually ranging in shades of bright yellow to chartreuse. Often grown in containers, they are also used as border plants as deer and rabbits tend to avoid them.
Euphorbia, pronounced Yew-FOR-bee-ah, is also called Spurge and is considered a trouble-free plant requiring little maintenance. Not only supremely attractive in the spring and summer, its fall foliage colors can be quite stunning, turning vivid shades of red, either at the top or the base. Though these varieties are annuals, there are also perennial Euphorbias, called Leafy Spurge, that are hardy enough to survive the rigors of colder zones.
