Barberry plants are a woody shrub that is an old-time favorite, especially when planted under a window as a deterrent to home-invasion or a “natural” fence or barrier plant; its signature thorns make it a formidable plant to tangle with, but since very little care is needed, you need not worry about getting stuck yourself.
Barberry (pronounced just like it appears) is also sometimes called the Japanese Barberry. Growing uniformly, albeit slowly, the Barberry may only need pruning once in a great while to keep it looking neat. The highly fragrant flowers that hang like tear-drops below the foliage are highly attractive and the fall leaf colors and berries are often rather dramatic. Even the winter silhouette is considered pleasing to the eye. Once established they require only average watering, being drought tolerant for short times. Barberry plants also do not have any common pests or diseases that will require your attention.
