The significant difference between hardwood mulch and Perm-A-Mulch Mats is that weeds cannot grow through (yet the water and nutrients pass right through) and they retain moisture.

When properly installed (by removing the underlying sod), they are sturdy enough to be run over by lawn equipment, heavy enough to not be picked up by the mower, and tough enough to take the whipping delivered by your trimmer. And if you get clippings on it, just pick it up and shake it off. As the tree grows, simply cut the hole larger to fit the trunk.
