Heliotrope Flower Seeds

Heliotrope Flower Seeds produce one of the most ancient, first formally-named flowers known, initially being introduced to the royal gardens in Paris in 1757 after its discovery in the Peruvian Andes. Widely utilized for cut flowers, bedding plants and perfume, there are more than 220 species of Heliotrope. Getting its name from the Greek word, helios, meaning sun, and tropein, meaning to turn, the name came about due to its blossoms’ habit of turning towards the sun as the day waxes and wanes.

Heliotrope, pronounced hee-lee-oh-TROPE, is most commonly known as Cherry Pie Plant, due to its vanilla-cherry fragrance, but is also called Turnsole. Found throughout the world in warm, temperate climates, you will find Heliotrope along the Atlantic seaboard, throughout the south and in many western states, Texas having an amazing 14 species. Its wide spread habitat speaks to its adaptability, though some species actually grow wild in their natural habitats and can become invasive. Garden variety Heliotrope should not be confused with wildflower species, such as Heliotropium indicum, Heliotropium amlexicaule and Heliotropium arborescens, the first two of which can be poisonous to grazing stock; the latter known to cause gastric distress in humans and animals. Water soluble, slow release fertilizers are the best way to feed Heliotrope. If grown in containers, their need for good nutrition is even higher. We recommend Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Heliotrope seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.
