Gypsophila Flower Seeds come in over 100 varieties, some of which are perennial and some growing as annuals. All varieties are more commonly known as Baby’s Breath here in the U.S., but sometimes referred to as Soap Wort, especially in the UK. In the floral industry it is often simply called “Gyp”, shortening its botanical name, which means “lover of chalk”, indicative of the type of soil in which Baby’s Breath thrives best.
Gypsophila, is pronounced Gyp-SOF-e-la or Gyp-so-FEE-la, depending upon what expert you talk to; this is one plant’s proper pronunciation that may never be solved. Make it easy on yourself and call it by one of its nicknames, the most recognizable in this country being Baby’s Breath. This is the tiny white or pink, airy flower that is used in corsages, bouquets, fresh flower arrangements and tucked into hair-dos. It can be fun or elegant, filling and thrilling in any mixed planting. It is long-lasting as a cut flower, usually outlasting its companions, belying its delicate appearance. Most often white, there are now also pink varieties in wide use, many with double blossoms and utilized as an alternative to lobelia in flowerbeds, containers, along borders and in window and deck boxes. Baby’s Breath is widely adaptable, preferring almost any type of soil but clay. Growing rapidly, they require plenty of water, especially during dry periods, and good drainage. They are not frost tolerant at all, but will germinate quickly with warm soil and grow rapidly as springtime temperatures rise. A heavy feeder, water soluble, slow release fertilizers are the best way to feed Baby’s Breath. If grown in containers, their need for good nutrition is even higher.
