Exotic Begonia

The exotic begonias are the begonias that don’t fit in any other category, but that have amazing characteristics that make them more than worthy of your attention. These begonias will not normally have showy flowers but will instead “wow” you with the fantastic colors and shapes of their foliage.

The exotic begonias will almost always be hybrids, bred to include the best of the parent plants. You will find they may be more vigorous, may grow bigger, might be more heat or cold tolerant and may be more drought tolerant. In some cases it will be apparent that there is no need for blossoms when the foliage is so incredibly unique and beautiful. Exotic begonias will have your friends and neighbors asking, “What is that?”

Gryphon Begonia Plant

The 'Gryphon' Begonia Plant is grown for its superb foliage which is heartily matched by its regal bearing, vigor and ability to survive under less than perfect conditions. Liking only the early morning sun, Gryphon prefers the shade and is remarkably drought tolerant. This hybrid Begonia’s foliage far outshines the blossoms it puts forth. Dark green star-shaped, serrated leaves are dusted with silver, leaving only the mid-rib and veins etched in vivid, forest green. The backs of the leaves are maroon, as are the stems they rise upon. The Gryphon Begonia is easily moved in and out of doors as the season permits, though most prefer to have one indoors and one outdoors!
