Dichondra Flower Seeds produce a low-growing ground cover that rarely, if ever flowers, and is popular as an annual bedding plant, nicely filling in between other annuals without choking them out, regardless if they are in the ground or in a container. An annual in cooler climes, it is often grown as a perennial ground cover or lawn in temperate climates, such as that of southern California and Florida. It will survive cold temperatures down to 25°F with only minimal browning if in the ground, though its container performance will not be as impressive. Dichondra, pronounced dye-KON-druh, is also known as Asian Ponyfoot, due to the round, horseshoe-shaped leaf, and if used as a lawn or ground cover, is best used in areas of low traffic or where it is difficult to mow, such as around stepping stones and trees or along foundations and next to walls or fences. Dichondra can be mowed, resulting in an exceptionally thick, carpet of greenery. Though lush and cushiony feeling under foot, it will not withstand being planted in a well-used play area for children or along those routes in your yard where the dogs run. One pound of seed will cover approximately 300 square feet when using as a ground cover. Maintenance requires that you water deeply, though infrequently, allowing the soil to slightly dry before watering again. As always, we highly recommend a slow release, organic fertilizer. Neptune’s Harvest is a good choice, aiding in germination and encouraging development of healthy roots. Care should be taken when choosing a fertilizer to ensure no harm will be done to the Dichondra. To make it easier on those larger areas, use one of our sprayers to make quick work of the job at hand! Each order of our fresh Dichondra seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality. |
