Armeria Flower Seeds

Armeria Flower Seeds yield plants that are one of the most durable and versatile perennials and is also quite long-lived. An herbaceous shrub, each and every blossom is actually made up of petite, perfect flowers clustered together at the top of an upright stem that rises above grassy, mounded foliage.

Armeria, pronounced ar-MARE-ee-ah, are also called Thrift and sometimes referred to as Seathrift due to its salt tolerance and often coastal habitat. Named after the Roman word for carnation, only due to the fact that from a distance they look like a carnation, they are not at all related, though they can perform the same function in your cut flower arrangements. The common name, Thrift, was adopted as these plants seem to thrive under even the harshest conditions. Preferring rocky, infertile soil, Thrift is both salt and drought tolerant, most often being planted in rock gardens or as a border plant. For the best performance while blooming we recommend regular feeding with Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are organically rich and formulated for blooming plants.

Ballerina Lilac Armeria Flower Seeds

Our ‘Ballerina Lilac’ Armeria Flower Seeds are new for 2013, this series producing uniformly compact plants with a somewhat broader leaf, stiffer stems and a larger flower head, measuring upwards of 1-inch in diameter. In trials she often waved heads above the competition. The red and white varieties in this series are European Fleuroselect winners; the entire series showed its ability to overwinter with reliable snow coverage in zone 5, while the Thrift’s reputation for tolerance to salt, drought and poor soils also survived intact. Our ‘Ballerina Mix’ Armeria Flower Seeds will flower the first year, while having all the attributes associated with the Thrift plant, such as tolerance to drought, heat and salt. Considered a hardy perennial below zone 6, the Ballerina series has exhibited winter tolerance to zone 5 with reliable insulating snow cover. Mixed with a very rich lilac color, the lipstick red and creamy white in this combination are European Fleuroselect winners for 2013. Approximately 50 seeds per each hand-filled packet.

Producing blood-red flower heads on extremely sturdy stems above broader-than-average evergreen grassy foliage, this Thrift plant possesses the same attributes that make it so very popular, especially in hot coastal climes. The Ballerina series is tolerant of salt and drought and seems to thrive in poor soils. She also showed remarkable strength, overwintering during trials in zone 5 with reliable snow cover. Joystick Lilac Armeria Flower Seeds

Our ‘Joystick Lilac’ Armeria Flower Seed is the product of impeccable breeding, producing a long-lived evergreen growing in basal clumps with the pom-pom-like blossoms rising above on wiry, airy stems. Also called Seathrift or just plain Thrift, Joystick Lilac prefers poor, infertile soils and is salt and drought tolerant. Plant in rock gardens, as a border plant or as a small-scale ground cover. The low grassy-looking mounds support tall, upright stems with pom-poms made up of miniature individual flowers waving at the top. Our ‘Splendens’ Armeria Maritima Flower Seeds produce an evergreen perennial that grows in small tidy clumps and is ideal for borders, edging and accenting, providing color in your beds long after other annuals and perennials have faded. Thriving in rocky, poor soils, as long as they are well drained, Armeria, also known as Thrift or Common Thrift, is your answer to those barren problem areas and can even be utilized in pots, window or deck boxes.
